Alright, first, create a New Track. When you first open a new template on Logic Pro, it will automatically prompt you to create a new track. After that, go to the menu bar and select Track to create a new track. Fairly straightforward, right?

Convenient though it is, some musicians don’t want to accommodate a 12-TET, insisting instead that we continue to use pure intervals derived from harmonics the way God and Pythagoras intended. Harmonics-based tuning systems are collectively known as just intonation. This is a poetically apt term, because it implies fairness. By contrast, the implicit message of 12-TET is that life isn’t fair. As we’ve learned, just intonation systems give you some lovely pure intervals, but are severely limited otherwise. A few malcontents prefer alternative historical compromise tuning systems that make some keys sound better at the expense of others sounding worse. There are many such esoteric temperament systems, but none of them are in widespread use.
If you’ve got friends in a town you’re touring, don’t forget to tell them! Also, if you post to Facebook that you’ve got x amount of hours in x city, you may have old friends you had forgotten about come out of the woodwork. Maybe that person you knew from high school will want to take you out and show you their town.
We love psychologist Anders Ericsson’s concept of “deliberate practice.” It describes an approach to learning in which we focus our activities on the areas that need the most work, steadily pushing ourselves to the edge of our comfort zone (you can read more about the science behind this method here). As learners, this kind of work can be tough to do because we often don’t know what we need to do next to improve.
Sometimes the bass sounds great merely doubling what is being played on the guitar — and especially when that guitar is being played by Jimmy Page. John Paul Jones actually had tons of bass-hooky songs, but here in “Over the Hills and Far Away,” the bass is a bit subdued throughout most of it — which makes this particular section stand out even more. That section is when Page climbs out of his solo with a three-octave arpeggiated run, and Jones follows alongside with a standard pattern of root-third-fifth-minor seventh across each octave, a mixolydian theme that would sound good in basically any context.
