And what better way to kick off this revolutionary new television outlet than to air the newly minted music video for the Buggles’ song, “Video Killed the Radio Star” at 12:01 AM on August 1st, 1981, in all its glorious irony?
With three heavy-duty club EPs under his belt, the Cairo-based producer dropped his debut full-length Terminal in late 2018. It’s a dense, intricate listen that meshes hip-hop, IDM, and ambient music. ZULI’s skills as a producer are constantly on display through his unique choice of textures and his intricate, obsessive rhythms. He never loses the streetwise attitude though.
The violin was his passion, so much so that in 1797, he published a pamphlet on the changing style of violin-playing between the Baroque and Classical eras, called Metodo per Violino. He ended up composing a handful of notable works, but his “educational” pieces are definitely the most well-known and still studied today in conservatories. Campagnoli wrote 30 Preludes for violin in all 24 keys, 41 Caprices for solo viola, and other Divertissements.

From the influential mid-century Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů, we have his Fantasia for theremin, oboe, string quartet, and piano. Composed in the summer of 1944 and premiered the next year in New York, this work may not be one of Martinů’s better-known pieces; but, nevertheless, it’s exciting to see a composer exploring a new and exciting instrument so late in their career. With the microtonal possibilities of this instrument, the entire tonal spectrum is your oyster, and Martinů’s off-kilter expressive notation really brings out the depth of beauty and unrest that this instrument is capable of producing.
Some guitarists want to hear minimal pick attack in their recordings, while others (myself included) want a lot — especially on guitar solos. Pick attack presence is a combination of pickup selection, pick type, picking location, the angle of the pick, and your amp settings.
“Using the technique adapted to a small instrument the man writes a whole world of the deepest thought and most powerful feeling. If I could picture myself writing, or even conceiving, such a piece, I am certain that the extreme excitement and emotional tension would have driven me mad.”
I don’t need to tell you that podcasting has blown up again and with heavy-hitting content like This American Life, Serial, and Mark Maron’s WTF, to name a few, it’s easy to see why. Content is better than ever. But with an influx of great content and more listeners also comes a lot of crap and poorly produced podcasts in a saturated market.
I’m one of those people that treats their dog like a person. I schedule my entire life around him, and relish in saying things like: “Oh sorry, I have to go home now, my dog is waiting for me.” I take approximately 15 photos of him doing the same things every day; my current favorite is when he sits on the top of our staircase so he can see out the window. We call this “watching TV.”

“This is a fundamental truth about any sort of practice: If you never push yourself beyond your comfort zone, you will never improve. The amateur pianist who took half a dozen years of lessons when he was a teenager but who for the past 30 years has been playing the same set of songs in exactly the same way over and over again may have accumulated 10,000 hours of ‘practice’ during that time, but he is no better at playing the piano than he was 30 years ago. Indeed, he’s probably gotten worse.”
The Headliners Club is kind of like a “build your own customized course.” If you need help on a specific project that doesn’t quite fit within one of our courses, you’ll be able to work with a Soundfly Mentor one-on-one to create a customized one-month learning program specifically tailored to your needs and goals.
My final point is to think about your instrument or gear setup, and anything else you’d want to dress the stage with. This one may take some years to fully conceptualize and realize, and it may be something that changes constantly. That’s all okay, but just know that it too matters.
With his final piece, I think Stefano achieved a really amazing vibrancy and power. The way it climbs the register increases the tension and emotional pull. The monophonic transitions create urgency and more power. And the different treatments of the different sections create a lot of interest and variation. Overall, he created a beautiful piece!” — Ian (Soundfly Mentor)
“A fast-paced send up of punk rock’s best bands from the past and present, this fun-filled activity book allows readers to apply Siouxsie Sioux’s makeup, draw Henry Rollins’ tattoos, color the members of Green Day, and complete word searches.”
